Blatchford’s building partner sourced sustainable solutions

Blatchford is aiming to be a community that uses 100% renewable energy, is carbon neutral, and that makes easy for residents to live green. The completion of the first geoexchange field and Energy Centre as part of the community District Energy Sharing System (DESS), which provides environmentally-friendly heating, cooling and hot water to buildings in the community, was an important step towards making that vision a reality.

In partnership with Chandos Construction, a geoexchange field consisting of 570 boreholes was built underneath the first stormwater pond to provide renewable energy for the DESS.  Chandos also constructed the first Energy Centre building which houses the system’s key mechanical equipment.

Aligning with partners and companies that value sustainability as part of their core business is part of Blatchford’s goal to ensure we are considering the environment in each step of development. During construction, Chandos used energy from the sun to power the site, replacing a typical diesel generator with solar panels. By using this sustainable solution, they helped reduce the carbon footprint at the construction site – saving 6,600 litres of diesel which translates into offsetting 3.5 tonnes of CO2, equivalent to 0.88 acres of forest.

In addition to powering the site in a sustainable way, Chandos also diverted more than 94 percent of construction waste from the landfill!
